Erin has reached hurricane strength and is expected to gain power as it churns across a warm stretch of the Atlantic Ocean this weekend.
The storm’s top winds measured 75 miles (121 kilometers) per hour Friday morning, the US National Hurricane Center said in an update at 11 am New York time. Erin is the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. The Category 1 storm is expected to encounter unusually warm waters this weekend en route to the Caribbean, fueling its growth into a major hurricane with winds of at least 111 mph.
