It should have been the easiest, if a bit silly and flippant, political debate question ever. But Andrew Cuomo, arguably the most cookie-cutter Democratic politician of 2025, fumbled it like a slippery, worn football.
During the final debate for New York City’s mayoral race Wednesday night, Cuomo, frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, and Republican underdog Curtis Sliwa were asked a fun question for the lightning round: if the Knicks and Mets were playing a game seven at the same time, which game would you attend? Although it was a fleeting moment in an otherwise fiery debate, it highlighted a crucial dynamic that has made Democrats like Cuomo irrelevant and anti-establishment figures like Mamdani the new stars of the party.
