One of Europe’s crown jewels, a centuries-old relic of irreplaceable artistic and historical import, has fallen into the hands of vandals intent on abusing it for their own selfish gain.

I’m not talking about the heist at the Louvre over the weekend, in which thieves broke into the most famous art museum in the world and stole nine items from a collection of priceless treasures that once belonged to French royals of no less significance than Napoleon Bonaparte.

I’m talking about the plunder of Canterbury Cathedral, in which a church founded by St. Augustine of Canterbury and famed as the site of Thomas Becket’s martyrdom was defaced with irreverent graffiti accusing God of being “indifferent to suffering” and “creat[ing] hate.” Unlike the Louvre heist, it wasn’t done by bandits with angle-grinders. It was done by a man who describes himself as an “agender goblin-thing,” with the enthusiastic blessing of the cathedral’s curator, Jacqueline Creswell, and its dean, David Monteith, because it catered to “marginalized communities.”

The graffiti, which officially debuted on Friday, is only the most recent example of Europe’s self-loathing elites plundering the cultural bounty they’ve inherited. Over the summer, after patriotic Britons began flying the St. George’s Cross and the Union Jack to celebrate their national heritage, local officials tore the flags down and maligned them as divisive and racist.

This past Easter, Charles — the British monarch and nominal head of the Church of England — couldn’t issue a basic missive in recognition of the greatest Christian holiday without a performative shoutout to Islam, which has become the second-most prominent religion in the United Kingdom. Thanks to the mass immigration of people from Muslim countries, the Muslim population of the U.K. more than doubled between 2001 and 2021. Neither the millions of recent Muslim arrivals nor the British government has shown any interest in assimilating these masses of people into British society, and native Britons who object are routinely smeared as racist and often arrested.

Even when these immigration policies turn deadly, as happened when a Syrian-born man literally named Jihad attacked a Manchester synagogue earlier this month, British subjects are not permitted to notice. The same goes for the abuse of young British women by Muslim immigrants, like the grooming and rape of local working-class girls by Pakistani men in industrial British towns like Rotherham. British officials covered up the abuse for decades out of fear that it would reflect poorly on Muslim immigrant populations.

And Britain is far from the only European nation cannibalizing itself to cater to arriving migrants. In 2023, the French government set a new record for the number of “first residence permits … granted to non-European immigrants,” according to the Spectator’s Gavin Mortimer. Earlier this year, hundreds of mostly African teens squatted in the Gaîté Lyrique theater in Paris — described by The New York Times as “a jewel in Paris’s glittering cultural scene since the 19th century” — demanding freebies from French taxpayers. It is common knowledge that many of the migrant men hail from cultures that treat women poorly and impose this cultural diversity on Europeans by harassing and assaulting native women and girls.

Even in historically isolated Switzerland, hundreds of foreign-born rioters set the streets of Lausanne ablaze in August after an Algerian man crashed a stolen scooter and died while running from police.

Meanwhile, European governments target their own citizens with oppressive censorship for offenses such as private prayer and Facebook comments. Self-appointed elites turn traditions and works of art that once represented the best of Western civilization into displays of woke debauchery. Look no farther than the Paris Olympics last year, where transgender performers made a blasphemous mockery of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” during the competition’s opening ceremony. Climate activists who throw gibberish accusations like “extractive neocolonialism” at the West throw paint on great European works of art that dare to celebrate great European accomplishments.

Europe’s ruling class is determined to undermine the continent’s Western, Christian heritage, because it cannot peacefully coexist with gay race communism. Neither can the jihadists they’re importing — but for now, both share a common enemy in Christendom.

It’s the height of irony when Emmanuel Macron blasts the Louvre heist as an “attack on [France’s] heritage,” because his government has been more prolific than anyone at doing just that. The stolen Napoleonic jewels represent a history that Macron’s leftist allies decry as racist, colonialist, and otherwise problematic. I’m surprised the French government didn’t already give them the same treatment numerous statues across Europe received in 2020 in the name of antiracism.

Europe’s biggest crown jewels — the rich cultural, political, artistic, and religious heritage it owes to its Christian past — were being plundered long before thieves broke into the Louvre on Sunday. Worse, it was an inside job, pulled off by cowardly government leaders who are missing a few crown jewels themselves.
