Cool fridge, hot topic.
A photo of a mom’s refrigerator is sparking a heated conversation online.
On Reddit, a user shared a photo of the contents of his sister’s fridge, which included 20 plastic water bottles neatly lined up on the top shelf, a shelf with three takeout containers full of leftovers, and a bottom shelf consisting of two tubs full of free condiments from fast food restaurants.
The crisper drawers had no fruit or vegetables and were nearly empty, with the exception of what appears to be a package of cold cuts.
Boxes of medication were seen on side shelves.
“This is my sister’s fridge. She’s kept it like this for nearly 20 years,” the Reddit user wrote.
He explained that their father worked in the food industry and it baffled him that his sister didn’t keep fresh food in her house.
“Our dad retired from 20 years in the Navy as a cook, and after his service, he worked in restaurants as a general manager. Growing up with a dad in the food business, our fridge and freezer were always packed,” he wrote.
“As an adult, my fridge is similarly always packed. My sister, on the other hand, is the opposite. This is her fridge. I don’t understand how a person lives like this.”
In the comments on the thread, he also noted that his sister is very strict about what goes where, too.
“Her son came home once and wanted to put a takeout plate on the water bottle shelf. She said, ‘There’s no space in the fridge for that!’” he wrote.
According to the user, his sister has no fresh food and rarely cooks — and her freezer looks nearly the same, with “neatly stacked boxes and bags of exclusively Trader Joe’s frozen food products, and two identical tubs of ice cream, side by side.”
“I love her because she’s my sister and because of our shared past, but I don’t like her as a person. She’s unpleasant to be around,” he shared.
He asked people to share their insights, and more than 1,500 comments cumulated, psychoanalyzing her.
“This is the weirdest combination of minimalist and hoarder possible,” one person noted.
“This is the spookiest fridge I have ever seen,” someone else said.
Some believed that it might have something to do with the way they were raised as a family.
“She stocks her refrigerator like someone who couldn’t find what she was looking for in the fridge she grew up with. Like she’s trying to make sure she can find it easily, maybe even at first glance if she can,” one person proposed, to which the original poster responded, “Maybe you’ve got something there.”
Many suggested that it’s possible the sister has OCD or another mental health condition.
“Taking the little sauces and stuff and keeping them can also compulsive behavior. My mema had ocd and hoarded. She would take all the condiments off the table and ask for more. I would always stop her from going to other tables because some restaurants would get upset about it,” one shared.
“OCD most likely. It is manageable. Is the fridge hurting anyone? No. Is it hurting her wallet? Probably. Hope she’s getting help,” another wrote.
